Your Friday Quickie: DIY Spice Blends + Italian Seasoning Blend Recipe

spicesIf you’ve already started ditching processed foods, you’ve probably already tossed your store-bought spice blends, but if you haven’t, take a look at the ingredients. Many of them have fillers (that you’re paying for and give you no nutritional benefit) and most likely also contain harmful chemicals and additives like MSG and hidden gluten. Some might even have partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, which is transfat. Also, the spices themselves are probably inferior, most likely irradiated and more. They can also be expensive. I like to buy my spices from the bulk bins at my local health food store. Typically for 2 scoops of a spice I pay less than a dollar! I then put them in glass spice jars I bought at The Dollar Store.

So, in the spirit of the Paleo/Primal lifestyle of getting back to the basics and knowing exactly what you’re putting into your body, why not make your own spice blends? They also make great gifts. I made some for my brother’s stocking (who also does Paleo).

These can easily be made between writing sprints. I made the Italian Seasoning Blend in under 5 minutes, and that was with pulsing it in my coffee grinder, which isn’t a necessary step.

And experiment. Start with a base from a recipe and then adjust until you have the right flavor for you. (And write it down!)

Really all you need are the spices, measuring spoons, and a glass jar to store them in. And then just shake 🙂
